Christmas Day 09

Snowball Fight!

Advertise | AdChoices

My kid is out of school today due to the weather. It’s 3 a.m. and already at the high temp of 32. It’s raining outside and supposed to change to snow. If you’ve never been to North Texas, let me just say, we’re not the best drivers in icy/snowy weather. My commute is 30 miles one way.

I think today is the perfect day to stay home, play some board games with “the man child”, play on Newsvine, and snooze a little. What do y’all think?

Silly girl what the hell are you doing up at 3:00 a.m., watching it snow? I hate this damn weather and I really thought that maybe we had made it through this winter without the dreaded 4 letter word. I am getting ready for work this morning but at least I can take comfort in the knowledge that it won't be a commute on snow and ice. Like you I hope my son is planning on staying home today as well because you probably don't want to be passing him on the streets of Dallas either, lol.

I woke up and heard the rain falling. I decided to look up T's school to see if it was cancelled. Since I got on the computer I was hooked;) Lol

Since 3 it changed from rain to sleet to snow.

Are you near Joplin or is that too far South? I'm from St. Louis but I've been in Texas since middle school.

Stay home! (and go back to sleep) The kiddos are only young for a brief second, you won't ever regret these few days here and there to stay home w/the 'man child'. =) I say this as I happily scooted mine off to school this morning, they were home yesterday and I need to get things DONE today. ;-)

And don't worry about the drives down there, trust me, people born, bred and raised and live here all their lives in this stuff still drive like idiots in it every winter!

We got a lot of snow this morning, had to shovel the car out to get it down the driveway. It still is not enough snow to close down this area in the snow belt, everyone is off to work. Enjoy your snow day Belove48.

Ahh, just different driving conditions in every part of the country. I didn't so much drive to work as I felt like I water-skied. It was a real white knuckle drive in this morning. I need something stronger in my coffee than creamer...

Haha!! That was Christmas Day of '09. This time last year we almost broke a record for snow fall. I think we were somewhere around the 13" mark. Anyway, it's hard to believe it was 80 on Saturday.

Absolutely!! May I share (a signal it's gonna be a long one). . .

I'm a kid (about 5th grade); my sister and I share a room (twin beds). Winter in New England; house is warmed by space heater, so bedroom's chilly. Mom sings up the stairs, "Wake up, Wake up you sleepyheads. . . " We look at each other and burrow down; time passes. Mom sings the second in the standard (not melody, what is that word??), "Ya Gotta Get Up, Ya Gotta Get Up, In the mo-o-o-o-rning!" Nothing from us. Hours pass and we stay real quiet so she'll forget we're here (we so clever!). Finally, she yells up, "You kids want lunch?" Turns out, she'd no intention of forcing us out in the cold, but since we were "faking it," figured she'd just leave us there out of her hair. So a perfectly good hooky day was ruined--by us!

When I had my own kids. . . Single mom, 2 kids, full-time college student (moved to within walking distance to school; no car). Every now and then, I'd announce a hooky day (usually winter when the schools were too dumb to call it off for me). Some of our best memories! Making popcorn in an old wire popper over the open flame of the gas stove (it's a campfire). Building tents which basically covered the whole room--living room, bedroom, dining room, it didn't matter! Folding a blanket to form a boat in the middle of living room. They'd watch TV, I'd serve lunch in the boat; they weren't allowed to leave it unless "swimming."

Showing 'em how to do laundry; how to bake cookies, how to make bread. Even cleaning their room on a hooky day was fun! Definitely take it!!

I remember building tents. That was so much fun!

We would also cover all of the windows to make it pitch black in the house and play hide n seek. That was fun when you can't see a thing.

I think the word you're looking for is "medley".

Big red prediction (that's how you know it's serious, when the Weather Channel puts it in a big red box) of 2-3 in per hr from 3-8am. So roughly a foot or more by the time schls open. They were all running closures at the bottom of the TV screen at suppertime last nite already. Continued snowing thereafter until about 10pm, so maybe Thurs will be a snow day, too, depending on how efficient they are at cleaning up the final tally.

It's wicked cold, so besides the accumulation there's also factoring in popsicle toes for the short ppl at the bus stop. It's not "really" that cold (19F), but the wind chill makes it "feel" like no degrees.

So then you have your closure trifecta, b/c 25-30mph winds reduces driving visibility. B/c in NYS where a ft of snow is nothing there's always a passel of hardy souls who go, I know! I'm gonna get on the NYS Thruway & get stranded for the next 2 days!

Well, OK, obvs they don't think that b/c they get on the stupid thing anyway, which means they're not thinking anything at all. The Thruway is always the best-cleared road so ppl get on it to avoid the sloppy main drags. All of em, judging by the miles-long backup in the early Dec storm (which also began on the 2nd).

All it takes is one jackknifed tractor-trailer & there's your recipe for sound bytes on the news of ppl whining to news reporters arriving on snowmobiles that no one has come to their rescue, they're hungry, they're almost out of gas, & they wanna go home. Well, you should've stayed there in the 1st place is what I'm thinking.

Why they just don't slap gates across the entrance ramps for this sort of weather I'm sure I don't know. I also wonder how they, um, evacuate whilst stuck in their cars. Males can risk a little frostbite & just discreetly clomp over to the shoulder in snow up to their kneecaps, but females have to risk a whole lot more frostbite & drop trou, which in such bitter cold & close quarters would not be conducive to a fun time. And if they really need TP b/c they can't hold that in any longer....how is this managed? I also wonder if any couples who get stranded together just let the snow pile up w/o running wipers & defroster & jump into the backseat.

Official snow day is not as much fun as playing hooky. Um, yeah, the plow came by & dumped 2 ft at the end of my driveway & my shovel broke/snowblower demised, so I'm stuck & can't get out. Or I heroically struggled to get that 2 ft of snow cleared out & now my car won't start & AAA says it's a 6 hr wait for a jump but what if it's not just a frozen battery? Which are the least creative excuses; I'm sure there are better ones. I could always dream something up about panic-shoppers & getting run over by a motorized cart retrieval system by a cart retrieval boy as I trekked to my spot that was 87 slots from the store doors. Those med supply stores sell all kinds of things to bravely fake injury w/ on your return to work.

I'm just all puhleeeeeze don't let the internet go out during this mess LOL I plan on ignoring laundry.

Last year, and the year before that and I believe the year before that even and then 2005. With the weather this week 3/4 of this country is experiencing artic freeze conditions does that mean the remaining 1/4 is the only one experiencing global warming?

At 3:00 am here in Austin, the capital of great places to live, it was so windy that my heavy Iron furniture blew off the patio. The basketball goal was found to be in pieces, and my beautiful DCS grill blew off the patio all the way to the fence 20 ft away. The whole house was up as sleet hit the windows and even my tough German Shepherd hid under the bed. No accumulation as it wasn't cold enough so the kids went to school. No traffic this morning because the temp has dropped and my neighbors are hiding.

Wow, that's windy. I think it's just as bad here since I can hear the wind swooping around. I haven't looked outside since the sun came up.

I love Austin, Bad Fish! I gain weight every time I visit there. With places like Hoovers, Casino El Camino, Trudy's, Magnolia's, Kirby Lane, the list goes on and on! I just made myself hungry! Lol
